Letter to the editor - July 22 - Fred Norman, Jr.

STORY TOOLS

Share your video, photos and news tips.

The United States is a secular nation even though a majority of Americans are Christians.

This means that the government does not interfere with anyone’s religion, and that Christians do not interfere in public education and do not determine which laws should be passed.

There are also secular Muslim countries including Turkey and Indonesia. Barak Obama attended a secular elementary school in Indonesia. His parents were secular. Barak became a Christian as a young man and has been a Christian all of his adult life.

I believe that he is a genuine Christian who believes that all human beings are due respect and acceptance.

Representative Keith Ellison, from the 5th district in Minnesota, is the first member of the Muslim religion elected to Congress. It is true that, in a private ceremony, he was sworn in using Thomas Jefferson’s copy of the Koran.

The internet contains accurate and useful information as well as a lot of lies and false information. The people who believe and spread false information that Barak Obama is a Muslim, and that he was sworn into the Senate using the Koran, are ignorant and should check the facts before spreading rumor.

Amen! The ignorance is ridiculous, as in our county and across SE Colorado, people just assume that they are going to vote Republican, without knowing anything about the person that they are voting for.
The choice is simple this year. Hope, Change, and Equality with job production in our country, with emphasis and assistance for education and healthcare (Obama). Or War and the average person continuing to struggle, while illegal monopolies continue to make billions through kickbacks, and ship jobs overseas. The Republicans sure won't talk to stay out of war and are trigger happy, but will spend trillions to miss a target and end up in the wrong country. They will easily take your dollar and not replace it. Healthcare and education... they take funding from programs for the low-income, including elderly and veteran programs. Insurance companies will continue to take half of our paychecks. (McCain/McBush).
Vote Obama! Yes We Can! "There has never been anything false about HOPE"!

I might as well continue with this greatness and huge surprise, and well needed letters to let people know about Sen. Obama.
It was a creed written into the founding documents of this nation, "yes we can". It was whispered by slaves and abolitionsists, and pioneers as they pushed West-ward against an unforgiving wilderness, "yes we can".
"Yes we can" to opportunity and to prosperity. "Yes we can" heal this nation and this world.
It was the call of women who reached for their ballots, "yes we can".
"Yes we can to justice and equality".
When this is all over, we will remember that we are one people, we are one nation, and we are not as divided as our politics suggest.
Together we will begin the next great chapter in the American story, with three words that will ring from sea to shining sea, "Yes We Can"!
"Nothing can stand in the way of millions calling for Change"!
The Democratic Headquarters is located at 506 Stewart Place, corner of Pearl and Stewart, White Duplex.
Great letters people! Go Barack.

History is in the making. Thanks to both of you... now lets move this forward and let people know about the person sent here from God to heal this nation, and save our soldier's and our family's futures.
"No matter what obstacles stand in our way... nothing can stand in the way of the power of millions of voices standing for change". (Obama)
Heck that is in the Bible. There is power in numbers, regarding prayer.
"Yes we can, Si Se Puede"!

I would love to see McBush gather 200,000 in Germany. He may gather 200, if that?
"From sea to shining sea", (Obama). We are talking Pope visits, planned months ahead, yet he went there with a couple weeks notice. Amazing to say the least!
Tell him about "no fear". His fear is an intelligent one.
He was challenged by McBush to go to Iraq. Heck he went to the whole Middle East and then some, and everyone greeted him with open arms, including all leaders.
Bush's propoganda effort by following every single idea that Obama says, to keep the Reps in office, is sickening.
Why even have a vote? Obama is already making the decisions! We have found the cure for this scary a** world! Go Barack!!!!

I just can't get over this as I'm watching MSNBC. Amazing! The persons that were there would equal the entire City of Pueblo, and potentially the entire County of Pueblo as well.
McBush's criticisms in a few hours will not come from his own words. It will come from Large Business and the pocket padders looking out for their own interests. Just as in our County, regarding the Republicans. Minus, Millbrand.

I'm convinced that a politician is a politician no matter what party they may be affiliated with. They are all going to screw us. I did notice that you wrote in another forum that you own a Glock .40 and an AR-15 .223 (or 5.56 mm if you are concerned in the least about what the Germans think). I'm certainly not into partisan politics but if you look at the historical record on who tends to try to violate (or abolish entirely) the Second Ammendment, you had better prepare to turn the ol' Glock and AR-15 over to the authorities in the near future if Obama takes it in November. It will certainly put us one step closer.

Obama is pro second amendment. He wants guns off of the streets that are in the wrong hands, just as we all do. Other than that, he doesn't mind guns.
If that were the case, I'd definitely not vote, but it isn't.
If you are confused of what this man stands for, please continue asking so that we can get the message out.
I can give you the names of Prowers County Obama Delegates that can surely answer your questions if you'd like?
So, if Obama was anti-gun, do you think that Johnny Duvall would be running on a Democratic ticket?
Obama silenced the NRA very quickly, with his approval of guns. I'm a member, by the way:)

Hmmm. Sounds like Obama knows the right things to say to the right people. Now, if he can just convince all his Democrat congressmen - and any present or future supreme court judges - that pro-Second ammendment is the right path, your beloved guns will be safe.

I worry about who decides who the "wrong hands" are. Will someone who talks about using domestic pets as target practice be considered as right or wrong hands by these deciders?

Posted by tristar12 on July 26, 2008 at 9:56 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I too am a member. The amazing thing about politicians is that they will constantly change their position based in whatever it takes to get the votes. They all do it, regardless of party. In that case one must look at the previous voting record of the candidate. Perhaps you should go on-line and read this article on the NRA-ILA website regarding your pro-Second Ammendment presidential candidate.

http://www.nraila.org/legislation/rea...

Sounds like a typical whitewashing to me.

I love how we can seem to just pick and choose which of our Constitutional rights we can keep and which ones we can discard. Let's just keep chiseling away at them and see where it takes us.

I've done numerous speeches, and I have said things that people take wrong, or just have flat out been wrong, unintended, with a day's notice or an hour's notice, to prepare the speech. Believe it or not politicians are human, and are allowed to make minor mistakes in a speech, as they learn more of what the people want in response to such.
As for picking and choosing laws, changing laws, etc. We have to remember that the Constitution was written in the 18th Century. A lot of common law came from an empire where domestic violence was legal, and murdering one's daughter was legal.
As we evolve as a nation, our laws do as well, including mores and taboos, which are either accepted or shunned, during that immediate period or generational period.
We live in a nation of great acceptance. This reason is why I cannot believe that there is such thing as separate parties in our present day.
We should all be united, and attempt to move forward united... therefore my vote will go to Barack Obama.
There are millions of laws and case law that could be enforced, yet are not, because they are not considered a more' or taboo anymore.
For instance, there are laws here in Lamar that aren't enforced such as spitting on a sidewalk, which I'm sure were written when concrete was a fascination.
So, on the second amendment, it is just traditional for Democrats to be considered anti-weapon. Not this time:)
Noting what was commenting earlier about Winchester. I have a BB gun as well. One pump, just gets the cats and dogs out of the yard, with a little "hello you're not welcome here", if you will. I had my wife shoot me in the behind at around 15 yards, and it did not break the skin.
Plus one has a right to protect their own property and their own domestic pets:)
Great conversations! We need to get this info out to the public.

"As for the cats... they make great targets for a bottle rocket or the BB gun."

Sorry, this doesn't sound like winchester is simply protecting his property. In fact, it sounds downright juvenile and cruel.

Posted by winchester on July 28, 2008 at 1:52 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Irresponsible pet owners are juvenile and cruel. Vicious animals and ferral cats running around is a great showing of our community is it not? Great for marketing business and new residents as well!
I'd love to drive into a city as a potential business owner and see fricken animals running all over the streets, including downtown. Then, as one would drive around town to see where his worker's would live and see the same, plus abandoned buildings and houses, and run down establishments.
There is no difference between me using my BB gun on cats, clean store windows, clean police and sheriff's vehicles, and courteous service in regards to the first impressions of our city and county.
Command presence begins once a patrol car appears on the scene of a crime. A clean patrol car is the first line of offense, the second line is the officer/deputy's appearance when they exit that vehicle, and his/her presentation of him/herself.
Therefore a dirty sheriff's vehicle and a panson wabling around doesn't have the effect, that a well groomed, professionally appearing PD officer would. This creates a disrespectful and dangerous environment for the deputy(s), by having to confront and use force or get ran from... i.e. the heat seeking devices.
On the same token, our city and county's first line of offense is presentation of itself, and the persons dealing with them... get the point? I don't know if education even matters in this county? I understand holding on to values and tradition, but when our City and County need to move forward, we stay with tradition.
We brought a young Chief into our City. He is making huge progress, why does that not occur in all other seats?
I think that we've had enough of last name or family favortism! They can afford their decisions, the rest of us cannnot!

"I'm the son of a preecher man". Holy smokes! Great speech and I wish that I knew who you were for our future Sheriff battle? We should be on the same ticket as Sheriff and Undersheriff.
We can tote our BB guns around.

I fail to see how our local law enforcement/local politics has anything to do with Obama and the Second Amendment.

If you two are done high-fiving and rubbing each other's bellies, can we get back to the topic?

I checked out the web link provided by tristar12 above. Apparently winchester mispoke. Obama did not silence the NRA, as his voting record and hypocrisy were cited very recently (7/25) on their website. Look under the news tab.

Does education matter to you? Then educate yourself.

Carny,
You are declaring that you don't fall under our Constitution? That federal law does not exist? You are saying that our next president does not have power over such? Come on!
I read the posting from the NRA. It is all political. So Obama said that he believed the D.C. gun ban was constitutional. What if I would say the same as a gun owner? D.C. is a violent city just as Chicago, so I would suppport such as well. I don't see many brokers being country boys carrying guns around for hunting purposes.
The animal in my sights is for food, family purposes, and the culture of which I grew up in. He understands that... we are fine.
The inner city gun carriers and drug dealers is what he is concerned about. Their sights are on a person, not an animal or a productive experience, or protecting their homes and families.
We are fortunate to not have to witness violent deaths on a weekly or monthly basis in our city. Think outside the box Carny. There is a nation and a world that our President has to make decisions for, or influence to keep us safe and keep us #1 in the world.
The NRA is just like McCain's campaign. A bunch of lobbyists and illegal monopoly leaders that take advantage of our donations every year for their own interests. "Sound familiar, it should"?!
I'm a member because of hunting issues, not gun possession issues, as it is nearly impossible to take legal guns away. It would take more than 8 years to do so.
I don't know why I'm explaining myself, as it is not going to happen, and Obama is pro-hunting and legal guns.
Don't listen to the propoganda efforts. You didn't see the rest of the words spoken in the little excerpts that were quoted. I'd take $100,000 to only post one statement as well. Wouldn't you? Don't question my knowledge on this issue.
Sheriff, not Undersheriff...

The last statement was to Educator, just to clerify.

Well, everyone should be a firm beleiver in the fact that "an unarmed citizen is just another victim"... which is what the lifting of the DC gunban is going to prevent. Now people that are allowed to carry legally can, and we all know that gun laws only effect those people. A criminal will always find a gun, they are criminals, DUH. they don't care about the gun laws because they buy from the trunks of other criminals not usually the gun store. So tell me how someone who stands for gun rights and the 2nd Amendment can't see that the DC gun ban was unconstitutional. It was preventing legal carry for those that could. Denver had a similar ban and maybe still does, but the news every night still shows how the criminals are getting the job done of shooting others. Maybe increasing the number of armed citizen carrying legally would reduce that crime rate! He's my quote for ya... "if guns are responsible for shootings, then pencils are responsible for mistakes!"

Posted by tristar12 on July 29, 2008 at 1:26 p.m. (Suggest removal)

It is completely idiotic to believe that you can be a hunter and not be concerned about gun possession issues. The politicians start out with some obscure firearm legislation that they believe will not concern anybody and the next thing you know they've chiseled away at most of your rights. I'm not just talking about firearms ownership with this one. Cold hard facts are not propoganda...from the NRA or anybody else. The crime (and homicide) rate in Washington, D.C., Chicago and most other cities that enacted handgun laws years ago has actually climbed. Boy, did that legislation work well. Maybe we can figure out why. Apparently not. It may take too much sense to realize that criminals don't give a darn about laws. That's kinda what gives them their identity as criminals. It's their thing. It's what they do. So now we have a bunch of unarmed citizens hoping and praying that their beloved local police force can get there to save them and their families before the armed criminal wastes their helpless fannies while stealing their belongings. All these laws do is make a criminals job that much easier. Right now if a criminal breaks into my house he assumes a certain amount of risk. He has no idea if I have a pistol loaded with 280 grains of .45 ACP semi-jacketed hollow points leveled at his head or not. They probably didn't have to assume that much risk in Washington or any of the other cities.
Your arrogance is amusing. "Don't question my knowledge on this issue". I would not begin to question your knowledge. It would be pointless and would drag me into your muck. An old quote comes to mind. "Never wrestle in the mud with a pig. You'll just get dirty and the pig enjoys it."

I suppose I'm done with this one.

Winchester, my admittedly effluent friend, you have performed in typically liberal fashion by putting words in my mouth and purposefully misunderstanding what I said. I have restrained from being blunt or rude, but I guess I have to get down on the floor to play with you.

As another poster noted in another thread, you tend to highjack conversations into topics you want to rant about ad nauseum, which usually have little or nothing to do with the origninal conversation, and inject your potential bid for sheriff as well. Let me be more specific, then. What does not washing PCSO vehicles (during a drought) have to do with Obama and the Second Amendment? Nothing. What do alleged, unsubstantiated misdeeds by allegedly prominent citizens of this county (which you are admittedly too lilly-livered to stand up and do anything about except spread vague rumors behind an alias) have to do with Obama and the Second Amendment? Nothing.

Most of us know by now that you entertain a pipe-dream of running for sheriff, so kindly keep those comments to posts where they are relevant. Most of us who read this forum wouldn't vote for you, whether we are happy with the current sheriff or not. True, we don't know who you are right now, but if you do seek nomination we will recognize you by your mundane rhetoric and your unique and vulgar style of articulation (or lack thereof).

Back to our topic, Tristar12 is dead on: we cannot afford to give up any more rights. Give them an inch, they'll take a mile. Thanks to the NRA taking "advantage of our donations every year for their own interests", we haven't given in on this one ... yet.

Makinsenseofit, you've been doing your homework, and I have a quote for you:

"Laws that forbid the carrying of arms ... disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man."

Guess who said that? Thomas Jefferson, quoting from On Crimes and Punishment (1764) by Cesare Beccaria, criminologist.

I guess I'm done in this mudhole too, but I have one last burning question. What the heck does winchester, who is an NRA member "for hunting issues, not gun possession issues", hunt with a Glock - a handgun? Will he do the usual liberal dance of weeing backward on this too?

Posted by educator on July 30, 2008 at 12:05 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Makingsenseofit: Good point and yes Denver still has the ban. People kill People, not guns or knives. I know that I wouldn't bring a knife to a gunfight, even with a ban in place, as you mentioned. Seeing what he has seen and what I have seen on patrol in West Denver, I am never unarmed when I travel to my ex-stomping grounds or out of town. But, walking unarmed as he has in such neighborhoods I can understand his vote years ago.
Tristar: Each city has the right to make it's own laws under the state, 14th amendment.
Carny, great comments, although Obama isn't opposed to guns. I hate to do it, but I have to here. McBush doesn't have the media coverage for all to see him turning around on himself, it is unfortunate. If you'd watch CNN for one hour during the situation room or Anderson Cooper 360, you'd see for yourself. Actually any channel. Every single thing that Obama has said that he is going to do, Bush and McCain are doing now after 7 years. McBush even agreed that 16 months is a good time frame to withdraw the other day.
I see it like a football game. Down by 6 with two minutes to go in the fourth quarter. The underdog (McBush) is going to fight dirty to get that 7, including stealing plays and having an onlooker in the crowd to see what the winning team is going to run next or steal their plays.
If McBush didn't stutter and bypass questions on the economy and healthcare, maybe he wouldn't need the person in the crowd, but I doubt it?
You did give me some ammunition for my future plans though, Thanks!
