The new sign at Community State Bank said it all last Friday. The National Weather Service reported temperatures in excess of 100 degrees for several days in a row and dry, hot conditions have led to red flag warnings and open fire restrictions in the region.

Granada high school teacher John Hopper accepts a $150 check Friday evening on behalf of the Amache Preservation Society from the Southeast Colorado Bar Association’s Randa Davis-Tice. Accompanying Hopper were two students involved with the preservation society, Jessica Rojas and Amanda Silva. The Colorado Bar Association contributed $500 to the society in honor of the late Gov. Ralph Carr Friday as well. Colorado Bar Association President Bill Walters praised the efforts of the local youth in their attempts to preserve the camp and to disseminate the lessons learned at the site. “You should be very proud. You don’t have to go very far to find heroes and heroines,” said Walters.
